chrysler gains edge by giving new flexibility to its factories
n.boudette,the wall street journal, april 11, 2006
why did chrysler¡¯s belvidere plant need
a more flexible production processes?
chrysler established a bad reputation. one day, chrysler developed a new car, pt cruiser
it is made in belvidere. however, there are also making the existing one, dodge neon
to make matters worse, pt cruiser was tall then the existing machine, so chrysler had to buy new machine which fit with pt cruiser. it cost so much money
for that reason, chrysler tried to find way to save some money. as a result, the flexible production processes can come in
therefore, chrysler earned huge profits. in one factory, there are made two kinds of cars
later, there will be one more car. it could produce more efficiently than other companies
the new machine is also cheaper than the traditional one. there is an cost difference of 181 dollar between them
if there is small difference, it is okay to make one and another in same line. because the assembling line is working along the same ways
chrysler could save much money for these reasons. accordingly, chrysler could sell their cars at competitive prices
toyota sold its car about 18985 dollars, but chrysler sold its car 15985 dollars. chrysler¡¯s other cars are also cheaper than the competing companies
how did the plant attain greater flexibility in production?
as i stated above, chrysler made multiple cars in the same
factory. if there are few cars in the plant, the plant cannot run twenty-four hour
