supporting statement 16 february 2013 university college of london department of economics economic policy msc
allelopathy is a phenomenon that a pine produces a detrimental biochemical material to other plants, which prevents them from growing. interestingly, this natural phenomenon can be found in the real world economy
although it seems to be giving equal opportunities to all participants no matter how economically developed they are, economic activities, in the recent years, appear to be limited in the field that the advanced group has already created. since the global economy has started merging into a single liberal market, it has become obvious that the younger players are facing fierce competition with the senior group
with no doubt, it is much harsher for developing countries to shape their economic ground better in todays reality of international trade. for the purpose of economic growth, the struggling group would be required to equip the basic competencies and their own economic play ground to improve the situation, and here, the key i have found is more sophisticated economic policies that can lead the countrys economy to the most sustainable way to grow
i am keenly interested in aid for trade (aft) in support of improving trade capacity in developing countries, because i would like to search for possible solutions to eradicate poverty in poorer countries. the participation in volunteer activities in non-profit communities and ngo forums on good governance could not fully provide a sense of self-fulfilment
it is because, through such involvements, substantial change for poverty reduction was seemingly either negligible or dawdling. yet, shortly after serving as a thesis assistant of two laotian government officials studying korean economic development model, i have truly come to want to explore more individual industrial development and related trade policies in southeast asia in depth
these laotian students at my school were asked to complete their graduation dissertations on adapting korean economic development model to enhance their tourism industry and build transportation infrastructure in laos, respectively. at the time i assisted them to do more local researches and collect the relevant statistics
upon concluding their works, both stated that the korean experience cannot be applied to the laotian economy because of the unfavourable given nature in laos. this, however, cannot convince me to simply give up seeking its potentials of development
south korea, for instance, has constructed a significant land transport infrastructure over five decades, even though its main land is covered by two-thirds of rugged mountains as is the case in the laotian landscape. apparently, it has been a powerful engine for economic growth of south korea
moreover, in aligning with national priorities, the strategically targeted industry to develop has been evolved along with the change of the global market needs throughout the half century so that south korea enabled to benefit from the global trading system. in other words, countries like laos can achieve more outstanding economic development if they have someone who can redesign their economic policies utterly by reflecting their characteristics
these encounters have fascinated me to seek a wealth of potentials in southeast asian developing countries as like south korea did throughout its development history and more locally suitable industrial policy with regard to aid for trade initiatives. in particular, i consider both private sector collaboration and capacity building at regional level could be of effective contribution in achieving trade strategies and comparative advantages in global markets
accordingly, i would like to develop further public private partnership models to include local stakeholders and capacity building programmes regionally coordinated, probably through association of southeast asian nations (asean).
meanwhile, the interest in economic development in this region has led me to work at the asean cooperation division at the ministry of foreign affairs and trade of republic of korea in which my task was to provide a draft research on the region on a weekly basis and assist in paper works in preparation of international meetings on the subject of asean and south korea. what i have found the most is the collective effort from the inter-governmental institutions became compelling to me than that of the single government, as it places a high value on supranational interest and is more capable for conducting a comprehensive transnational research
due to the governments limitation conscious of political dynamics when initiating the policy, the pursuit working at the international organisations makes sense to me in order to realise my vision of poverty free world. to do that, i need to obtain greater economic background and the thirsty for economic analytical ability drew me to apply ucls economic policy msc
i have also taken a number of economically-related courses: introduction of economics; applied economics; economics of development; and international economics. once new programme starts, this would be of help in deepening my economic knowledge and synthesising a deal of researches on the area, which, in turn, could be an asset when conducting my own study (ÀÌÇÏ »ý·«)
