This study examined the diffe
rences in levels of perceived social support and self-esteem between general and vocational high school students. Students\' perceptions of emotional, appraisal, informational, and instrumental support from their mother, father, siblings, in- and out-of-school friends, and teachers were measured. Data were collected from 685 high school students in Pusan Metropolitan Area, who were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling, and were analyzed through multiple regression method. The major findings were£º1) students of general high schools reported higher levels of perceived social support and self-esteem than vocational high school students; 2) there was a positive relationship, which was more marked in general high school students than in vocational high school students, between the perceived social support and self-esteem scores; 3) the effects of appraisal and informational support for general high school students, but none of social support types for vocational high school students, on self-esteem were statistically significant; and 4) that the perceived social support from out-of--school friends was positively related to self-esteem for general high school students, but social support from siblings was positively related for vocational high school students. Theoretical model for the differences in the levels of perceived social support and self-esteem between general and vocational high school students was not developed in this study, and was left for future study.   (ÀÌÇÏ »ý·«)
