The purpose of this study is
to find out the actual status of current and past employment of graduates of special high school for the mental retardation, and the actual status of their social adaptation, and factors associated with the employment status of handicapped youth existing high school from 1996 to 1999. In this study, researchers conducted a four year citywide follow-up study of school program for trainable mentally retarded students using a survey through mailing system. Subjects are 151 graduates of school for the mental retardation. They are asked to answer this questionnaire if they can do. However, if students\' impairment is too severe to do that, their family and relatives are allowed to respond this questionnaire. 208 questionnaires were sent to each subject, 151 questionnaires were sent back to researchers.
Several findings were found i
n this study. First, it was found that employment rate is very low for young adults who graduated from the special high school for the mental retardation, that their unemployment rate was very high for young adults, that no matter how many time those young adults got a job, their job is unskillful, simple works in factory, and at most under minimum wage job. Employment pattern of young adults seems to be most highly both support employment and protection workshop. Second, it was also found that their current job is totally unrelated to their training program in special school for the mental retardation. Only few graduates having experience job in both past and present responded that they have worked job correspondent to their training program in special school. Third, a supermarket and stationary store are mostly available to young adults with mental retardation in our community. They responded that they have been using a supermarket and stationary store mostly often. For being an independent at home, it was found that some young adults still need somebody who take care of them in order to get a life at home and in community. (ÀÌÇÏ »ý·«)
