The organization
Background
eTEC Engineering & Constructi
on, or eTEC in short, is a construction company whose main service is building industrial facilities such as petrochemical plants, power plants, and factories (the biggest business is oil production facilities). The company's slogan, “We build your dream”expresses its will to maximize customer satisfaction with eTEC by sharing and fostering the ideals and values that the customers pursue. The company was founded in 1997, and its revenue peaked in 2008 with $7 billion. Now the company has a total of 688 employees, $ 0.6 billion in 2016 revenue. The company’s organizational structure is as the following figure.
Problem
Since the economic downturn,
the oil price has dropped (See Figure 1). The clients, who are usually the oil producers, in the oil market are much less motivated in expanding their infrastructure for oil production. Hence, eTEC was not earning enough contracts, and its main business, the construction of oil facilities, was severely damaged. The company faced a severe downturn, and the revenue has dropped significantly over the past few years (See Figure 2).

Other key players in the comp
any’s business are the suppliers, the manufacturing companies that produce industrial machines and materials. Over the past few years, while eTEC was suffering, many of the suppliers found their way to cope with the new market environment by using new technology, the Internet of Things, or IoT. eTEC can learn from these suppliers to change the way it does its business.
Before downturn, the employee
s did not feel the need for change because eTEC’s business kept booming. Now the company has gone through traditional ways to overcome the downturn such as massive layoffs, freezing salaries, and cutting down benefits. However, none of them effectively solved the situation. The company and employees realize a major change has to be made. Yet, the leadership has not given a clear direction regarding what kind of a change must be made.

The Internet of Things and An
alytics
Over the past few years, whil
e eTEC was suffering, many of its suppliers found their way to cope with the new market environment by using analytics and the Internet of Things, or IoT. For example, General Electric (GE) implemented them to their business by installing sensors to industrial machines such as turbines to monitor their performance, gather data and analyze them to increase the efficiency of their products. This technology allowed GE to get 1% improvement in efficiency from the IoT turbines by optimizing fuel consumption and maintenance interval which accounts for $4.4 billion in fuel savings every year (Thomas H. Davenport, 2014). Almost all of the major industrial machine companies implemented IoT which became the key element in the market. eTEC needs to learn about IoT to adapt to and thrive in the new environment.
The analytics initiative invo
lves in implementing IoT technology to eTEC’s business to provide the clients the analytics solutions for the optimized operations of their facilities. The solutions will involve in providing the infrastructure, hardware and software for IoT, installation service, analytics service and training. The details of the IoT-analytics initiative is as the following:
Analytics Service
eTEC will establish infrastru
cture such as servers and a data center, and install sensors to the key components of the clients’ facilities, such as turbines, pumps, agitators, generators, and so on.
The sensors will gather data
about the level of vibration, pressure, temperature, speed, fuel consumption, etc and transmit them via the internet to a data center.
The transmitted data will be
monitored and analyzed to find ways to improve the efficiency and performance of the equipment and machines.
