Othello, topic #1
Othello was a brave and stron
g man. He had been through severe hardships: he was involved in many battles as a soldier and, captured and sold as a slave once. Also, his future was bright because he got married to a beautiful woman, Desdemona. Furthermore, he became a general which is socially at high status. However, unfortunately, he was an extremely jealous person. He was jealous of Cassio¡¯s and Desdemona¡¯s relationship which wasn¡¯t even real. His tragic flaw was that he was overly jealous. This jealousy made him so foolish that he responded to Iago¡¯s lies too easily. He lost his rationality and became so hasty in his judgment that he killed his beloved Desdemona and then took his own life.
When Othello became jealous,
his rationality faded away. Why couldn¡¯t he be suspicious of Iago when Iago was talking about Cassio and Desdemona having an affair? Othello promoted Cassio instead of Iago even though Iago used his connections to persuade Othello to promote him. It wasn¡¯t hard for Othello to assume Iago was setting him up for what he did. However, he was so jealous of Cassio and Desdemona that he couldn¡¯t control his emotions. In the first scene of act four, he lost his consciousness to an epileptic fit after hearing from Iago that Cassio and Desdemona slept together. That incident clearly shoed that he couldn¡¯t control himself when he was jealous. A person normally doesn¡¯t faint just because someone had told him without any evidence that his beloved one slept with someone else. Moreover, Othello easily became angry at Desdemona since Iago tricked him. His jealousy left him nothing but hate, and he didn¡¯t think of anything else but to hate Desdemona and Cassio, and to believe Iago, making it easier for Iago to trick him.
When Othello saw Bianca throw
ing the handkerchief to Cassio, he didn¡¯t even bother to ask her and Cassio where they got the handkerchief because he believed what Iago had told him: ¡°¡¦I am sure it was your wife¡¯s - did I to-day see Cassio wipe his beard with.¡± Only if he thought reasonably enough to ask Cassio about the handkerchief, could he have solved his misunderstanding. Not only that, he never talked to Desdemona and Cassio to find out whether their relationship was true or not. Where was his logic? How could he presume they were having an affair without any concrete evidence, without even asking them what happened? That was because he was too jealous, and this had taken his rationality away.
In addition to losing his log
ic, the jealousy made him very hasty. When he was trying to find out if Desdemona had given the handkerchief to Cassio, he wasn¡¯t emotionally stable. As soons as Desdemona told him she didn¡¯t have the handkerchief with her, he started to press her harder, instead of listening to what had happened. Desdemona told him, ¡°Why do you speak so startingly and rash?¡± as he started to yell. Why couldn¡¯t he have waited? Moreover, in the second scene of act five, Desdemona clearly told him that she never loved Cassio and gave him the handkerchief. She said, ¡°No, by my life and soul! Send for the man, and ask him,¡± and ¡°I never did offend you in my life; never loved Cassio but with such general warranty of heaven as I might love: I never gave him token.¡± However, Othello did not listen to her and send anyone to find out. If he was a little bit more patient, things might have gone differently.
Othello was overly jealous. H
is extreme jealousy and impatience caused his downfall. He never talked directly to Desdemona and Cassio about their relationship and never had a crucial evidence to prove. Also, he didn¡¯t wait and listen when Desdemona was telling him the truth. As a result, he killed Desdemona. When he realized the truth, he killed himself as well.
