¡°The Voice¡±
The movie was interesting. It
shows the context of the movie in a way of combining with musical component. In the middle of characters¡¯ conversation, people meddle in and start singing and dancing. The depiction style of the movie resembles Indian media.
One important thing I noticed
from the movie was that people are poor, but they are happy and full of emotions. Plus, although it¡¯s not 100% Portuguese, the creole sounded beautifully, and what they wear is always colorful, even during the funeral. Also, I felt people do almost everything together, showing how close they are to each other. I suppose they are very good at socializing with people.
The movie was a little bit wa
y off from the reality, though. The main character, Vita, leaves her country for studying abroad to Paris. At there, she gets a lot of attention from people, making many friends including her boyfriend. She sings and releases an album, too. When she comes back from Paris, she pays money for what she wants way more than what she needs to pay. Her life is so smooth. It seems like wherever she goes, she¡¯s in the center of everything, and everything¡¯s under her control. I believe this is generally not true for the most foreigners. There would be many more problems than one can imagine: language barrier, cultural difference, glass ceiling, discrimination, cost of living, exchange rate, etc. What I¡¯m trying to say is that the problem the movie presents is too simple. But, I suppose the film maker didn¡¯t want to make the movie too seriously.
At the end, Vita does herself
a funeral. In this scene, I could notice that they have a different view about death. They seemed to embrace death, and understand it as reborn. Vita goes into a coffin and everybody dances and sings which generally wouldn¡¯t be appropriate for a funeral. I perceived Vita¡¯s death as giving up of what she was used to and by being reborn, she¡¯s accepting a new life with new custom (her French boyfriend).
