The movie titled, “Blindness,”
describes what would happen when people in a society are gone blind. In the movie, some people try to solve problems by working together like the male and the female main characters (the doctor and his wife) while some other people take an advantage of the chaos to satisfy their greed just like the “King of Ward 3”. I found two deviance theories to be applied in the movie: differential association and rational theory. Furthermore, there are a few factors of social structure that can be applied.
Differential association is a
theory of deviance that holds that violation of rules results from exposure to attitudes favorable to criminal acts. In the quarantine for blinded people, there was a guy who called himself as “King of Ward 3.” He was against rules that would keep the order of the quarantine. When the doctor came to ward 3 to discuss about food rationing problem, the king was being very sarcastic, not caring at all. The people in ward 3 were in favor to the king’s attitude toward the rules and started to follow him. The king took whole food by threatening people using a gun. And he had many followers helping the king acts of crimes. Like the definition of differential association, the people in ward 3 became accomplices in crime as they saw the king’s conduct and became favorable to it.
Another theory for the movie
is rational theory: doing what is not normally accepted when that conduct is worth to do. The king told people in the quarantine that they should send women for food. His purpose was to have sex. After having a conflict, some women agreed to that to feed people. Although some of the ladies knew how their husbands would feel if they went ward 3 for the proposal, they reached to a decision that food for people outweighs humiliation they would have after having unwanted sex. When people talk about deviation, they usually talk about something like a married guy flirting with a woman. However, in this case, the ladies never intended to have that kind of deviation: having sex with the people in ward 3 for food. Still, their decision would not be normally accepted. Their husbands strongly refused to the decision, too. But they decided to have sex to feed people and survive.
There are a few components of
social structure that can be discussed in the movie: ascribed status, achieved status, master status, social role, group, primary group and secondary group. Ascribed status is a social position assigned to a person by society without regard for the person’s unique talents or characteristics. Males, Females, sons and daughters, all kinds of races in the movie represent ascribed status. On the other hand, doctor, financial advisor, receptionist, prostitute are achieved status, a social position that you can earn. Master status is a status that dominates others and thereby determines a person’s general position in society. The doctor was a representative of his ward. Because people were gone blind, and their society was in a chaos, his status as a representative of the ward was more important to people than his status as a blinded doctor since blinded doctor has no use. Social role is a set of expectations for people who occupy a given social position or status. Before people were blinded, they were doing what they had to do. The doctor treated people’s eyes, his wife cooked dinner for him, and the receptionist received phone calls. Group is any number of people with shared norms, values and goals. The blinded people in the quarantine are a group. In that group, people in a same ward would be a primary group, a small group characterized by intimate, face-to-face association and cooperation. And other people in different wards would be a secondary group, an impersonal group in which there is little social intimacy or mutual understanding.
While doing this project, I f
ound differential association and rational theory could be applied to some situations occurred in the movie such as the people in ward 3 following the king, and the women letting them have sex. And I realized ascribed status, achieved status, master status, social role, group, primary group and secondary group were all in the movie. The movie was great. It gives us a message that, whatever happens to people, they always form some sort of social group and interact with others whether they behave good or bad.
