alliteration두운(頭韻): 이웃한 단어들에서의 음의 반복, 두운은 주로 단어의 첫 번째 자음과 관계가 있다. (때로는 강음절 단어 안에서의 자음과 관계된다)

다음 coleridge의 “the rime of the ancient mariner”에서 인용한 연에서 나타난 자음 f, b, s, d의 반복은 좋은 예가 된다. the fair breeze blew, the white foam flew,  the furrow followed free;  we were the first that ever burst  
into that silent sea.
down dropped the breeze, the sails dropped down,
twas sad as sad could be;  and we did speak only to break  
the silence of the sea!

assonance유운(類韻): 한 행이나 일련의 행에서의 모음 소리의 반복, 유운(類韻) 또는 모음운(母音韻)은 장모음, 단모음 패턴의 균형을 어긋나게 함으로써 읽는 속도에 영향을 주며 이러한 방법으로 유운시킨 단어들이 강조된 것처럼 보이게 한다. 각운(脚韻)과 비교하자면 각운은 모음과 자음의 유사성이 동시에 있는데 반하여 모음운은 강음절의 모음 소리만 유사성을 가지고 있다

즉 lake와 fake는 각운이지만 lake와 fate는 유운이다. 다음 예에서 비록 eye와 hide의 모음의 철자는 다르지만 발음이 같다는 것을 알 수 있다

cold eyelids that hide like a jewel  

hard eyes that grow soft for an hour;.

ballad stanza담시연(譚詩聯): 4행연으로 제 2행과 제 4행은 약강 3보격(iambic trimeter)이고 서로 압운하며 제 1행과 제 3행은 약강 4보격(iambic tetrameter)이고 압운하지 않는다.다음 samuel johnson의 다음 시는 ballad stanza의 예이다.

blank verse무운시(無韻詩): 압운하지 않는 약강 5보격(iambic pentameter). milton의 paradise lost와 shakespeare의 극이 이 형식으로 씌어 있다

다음은 richard iii에서 인용한 것인데 약강 패턴으로부터의 이탈이 극소수이다. ˘ ˘ ˘ ˘ ˘   he can not live, i hope, and must not die   ˘ ˘ ˘ ˘ ˘ ˘

english or shakespearian sonnet: (의미상으로)네 행으로 된 세 개의 연과와 하나의 couplet(2행)으로 이루어졌으며 압운의 형식은 abab cdcd efef gg이다.
