이 논문은 이항로ㆍ기정진ㆍ이진상 3인이 보여준 ‘심즉리
’를 사단칠정논쟁과의 관련성 속에서 이해해 본 것이다. 그것은 이황과 기대승에 의해 시작된 사단칠정논쟁 이래 학파와 학파 사이에, 혹은 특정 학파 내부에서 300년 동안 지속된 논쟁과 입론의 과정이 어떻게 그리고 왜 하필이면 ‘심즉리’, 곧 이들이 공통으로 보여주고 있는 학문적 지향으로 드러나게 되었는지 묻고 그 답을 찾아보는 것이다. 이것은 결국 사단칠정논쟁과 ‘심즉리’의 연관성을 묻는 것이자, 이황과 기대승 사이에서 시작된사단칠정논쟁이 조선후기 300년의 시간 속에서 형식을 달리하며 지속되었고, 그 결론이 마침내 ‘심즉리’로 나타나게 되었음을 확인하는 것이기도 하다.이황이 직접적으로 주장하지 않았을 뿐, 리발 그리고 사단과 칠정의이질성에 대한 긍정, 그리고 그것을 통한 도덕적 정감의 위치를 확정함으로써 이미 이론적으로 ‘심즉리’에 근접해 있었다는 사실에서 보자면,그를 계승하여 이진상의 ‘심즉리’가 등장한 것은 전혀 의외가 되지 않는다. 그런 의미에서 퇴계학을 계승해 마침내 ‘심즉리’를 표방하며 등장한한주학은 이황의 문제의식과 지향을 더욱 철저하게 관철시킨 것이라고이해된다. 반면 이항로와 기정진의 ‘심즉리’는 기대승과 이이의 시각을계승할 경우 결과적으로 도덕주체가 부정되어버리는, 곧 ‘기발리승일도설’과 ‘심시기’의 이론체계에 내재해 있는 문제를 해결하기 위한 두 사람의 선택으로 이해할 수 있다. 이들의 시각 자체는 이미 율곡학으로부터벗어나 버렸지만, 그들의 문제의식은 여전히 기대승과 이이에 닿아 있다는 측면에서 이들은 기호학파의 인물이었다.

This article explains ‘Mind i
s Li’ demonstrated by three persons,Lee Hangro, Gi Jeongjin, and Lee Jinsang, with relevance to theArgument of Seven-Four Theory. It is about asking and answeringquestions regarding this: After the Argument of Seven-FourTheory was initiated by Lee Hwang and Gi Daeseung, the processof the argument continued for 300 years among schools or evenwithin a school, but why did it become exposed somehow as ‘Mindis Li’(心卽理), that is, the academic goal that those personscommonly pursued. This is also about exploring the relationshipbetween the Argument of Seven-Four Theory and ‘Mind is Li’ afterall and also verifying that the Argument of Seven-Four Theorystarted between Lee Hwang and Gi Daeseung continued in differentforms for 300 years in late Chosun, and the conclusion finallyappeared as ‘Mind is Li’.From the fact that Lee Hwang just did not insist it directly, butit was already close to ‘Mind is Li’ theoretically as affirming Ribal(理發) and the difference between Sadan(四端) and Chiljeong(七情)and also fixing the position of moral feelings through that, it wasnot a strange thing at all that Lee Jinsang’s ‘Mind is Li’ appearedafterwards by succeeding to him. In this sense, we can understandthat Hanju's Learning that finally appeared as succeeding to Toegye's Learning and supporting ‘Mind is Li’ did accomplish LeeHwang’s critical mind and pursuit more thoroughly. Meanwhile, wecan also understand that Lee Hangro and Gi Jeongjin’s ‘Mind is Li’was the two’s choice to solve the problem internalized in thetheoretical system of ‘one way that ki is generated and then lifollows it’ and ‘Mind is Ki’, that is, if they had succeeded to GiDaeseung and Lee Yi’s point of view, it would have denied themoral subject after all. Their viewpoint itself already wasestranged from Yulgok's Learning, but their critical mind stillreached Gi Daeseung and Lee Yi; in this sense, they were themembers of Giho School.   (이하 생략)
