전통적 지식인인 ‘선비들’은 현대의 그들과는 너무 달랐
다. 마르고, 고집이 셌으며, 경제 활동에는 적극적이지 않았고, 독서와 교양에 집중했다. 1장은 그들의 삶을 개략 스케치하고, 그 배경에 깔린 세계관과 가치관을 개략 적어 보았다. 선비들은 세속적 가치가 아니라 영원의 가치를추구하는 사람들이었고, 그런 점에서 우리에게는 ‘낯선 사람’들이라고 해야겠다. 서양의 수도사들이나 종교적 헌신자들에 해당한다. 다만 그 초월적 가치를 내면화하고 일상과 정치에서 구현하는 점에서 교리와 조직,교회를 통한 종교와는 차이가 있다. 2장은 그 삶의 내부, 혹은 배경을살펴보고자 했다. 농업사회에서 자란 점에서 그들은 공동체적 사유를 체화하고 있고, 그런 점에서 개인을 단위로 한 산업사회의 인간과는 달라질 수밖에 없었다. 이성보다 감정을 더 원론적으로 보며, 집단과 1차적연고를 중시한다. 정치적으로는 권위주의적 질서를 형성했다. 이처럼 ‘가까운 거리’의 문화는 장점과 단점을 다 안고 있다. 근대과학의 성장에는불리했지만 새로운 과학의 출발과, 인간의 회복을 위해 긍정적 역할을할지 모른다.

It is not easy to find out wh
ich elements of Korean culturaltradition have determined the patterns of thinking and behavior ofKorean people in modern society. The following is no more thana rough sketch to show some basic features of Korean culturewhich seems to be influential in modern society of Korea.In Korea, past and present, emotion was and is functioning asa main power to drive its social life. Emotional relation betweenmen is more appealing than rational and logical calculation evenin the business life in Korea. This is why the social life in Koreais driven by nepotism, often ignoring the law and order. It cannotbe said that emotion(情) always is inferior than reason. But it isundeniable fact that the emotionalism in Korean culture could bean obstacle to rational working of modern society.In traditional Korean society the unit of a society was not anindividual man but a whole like family or nation, so that even inmodern Korean language 'we' is often used to designate 'I'.Individualism, an ideology upon which modern society is working,has been still regarded as a kind of deviation in Korea.The emotionalism of Korean people is deeply related to theirthis-worldliness, which dose not acknowledge the existence ofGod transcendental beyond the network of correlated humanbeings. Theology, accompanying asceticism, could not be found inConfucianism, a kind of state-ideology during Yi-dynasty. Confucian ethics, emphasizing duty to devote oneself to the whole,always sought the golden mean between two extremes, asceticismand indulgence. This was a strategy to live harmoniously in thecondition of agricultural society.   (이하 생략)
