In the Thirteenth Century, We
stern European Scholastics like Philippe theChancelor had tendency to identify the angels of biblic literatures and theintelligences of the pagan philosophic works. In this way, they attempted toreach their goal: a harmonius marriage of faith and reason or that of theologyand philosophy. However, for Albert the Great, this kind of identification isnothing more than an reconciliatory eclecticism: this would not guaranteeharmonious coexistence of those two different orientations, but compromise anddestroy proper domains and disciplines of each science. So, taking diametricallyopposed position to his predecessors like Philippe, Albert strictly distinguishesor dissociates the two kinds of immaterial substances on the ground of hisprofound philosophical understandings. And while dissociating the two kinds ofcelestial substances, he paves his own way to establish a harmoniouscoexistence between the natural and supernatural orders of reality, eachregulated by its own principles. Likewise, he endeavors to guarantee properdomains and disciplines of theology and philosophy, especially the latter, withthis distinction. And from Albert's scientific distinction or dissociation betweenangels and intelligences, one could see the reason why some intellectuels fromMiddle Ages to our own days find a still life guardian figure of the naturalreason or science in Albert the Great.
