A classification of doctrine(
Îç÷÷) is to classify the teachings according totheme, time period, etc. This classification of doctrines was usually done byscriptural commentators who, while seeking a way to accommodate the diversityof the Buddhist teachings into a single system, usually tended to valorize theteachings of their own school. In addition, Teaching taxonomy was a majoraspect of the textual studies of many 5?8th century monks from the scholarlyschools of Chinese Buddhism, such as Tiantai(ô¸÷») and Huayan(ü¤åñ). It isthought that this practice originated in China during the period of the northernand southern courts(ÑõÝÁðÈ, 420?589), from the time of Sengrui(ã¬çÕ). In theclassification of doctrine during the period of the southern courts, due to thenecessity of comprehensive understanding of Buddhist scriptures and theirdoctrines, its first goal was to arrange and analyze them. The attitude ofselecting and following a specific scripture appeared much later against ourexpectation, while the scholars in the early parts of the period of the southerncourts were rather interested in understanding and accommodating the doctrinalcontents of various Buddhist scriptures. There was no sectarian perspective onBuddhism at that time, such a perspective, combined with the classification ofdoctrines, appearing since the establishment of Sui and Tang dynasties.   (ÀÌÇÏ »ý·«)
