Self-realization does not mea
n the simple actualization of one¡¯s intrinsicnature in teleological sense. Rather it consists in changing oneself to what hewants to be. C.G. Jung thought that human being has a ¡°fundamental impetus¡±to self-realization. It seems to me that his theory shares a similar perspectivewith that of K. Jaspers. According to his existentialism, every man, as anunknown abyss, tends to pay attention to the voice of dark foundation in him.And it is by following this self-directive ¡°intentional power¡± that man cancomplete himself/herself. Jung also said that, in order to recover the life of atrue self, one must free himself/herself from his/her persona and allusivecharacters. Jung¡¯s claim can be realized by philosophical counseling, because itcan help to remove allusive characters formed by human unconsciousness.During the philosophical counseling, an counselee has a chance to examinehimself/herself by an application of critical thinking. In doing so, he/she canafford to make a distinction between the place where it is possible to apply alogical judgement and the place where it is not possible. The role ofphilosophical counseling is two-fold: in the sphere of logical judgement, on theone hand, it can protect logical activities by controlling the intervention ofpsychological power(which twists logic); in the sphere of non-logical judgement,on the other hand, it allows the autonomy of non-logical factors by respectingthe existence of diverse emotional movements. The application of criticalthinking to examining the counselee makes him/her find that every non-logical elements are based on the desire to be respected by others, and that this desirecomes from the fears of solitude, emptiness, and death. But in order to changeunconsciousness to the consciousness, man needs to confront (and admit) thefact that the process of living is no other than that of dying. And it is only inthe course of philosophical counseling that we can make this change, becauseonly this counseling gives the chance to confront our existential condition. Indoing so, philosophical counseling allows counselee to find the way ofself-realization. (ÀÌÇÏ »ý·«)
