To explore the origin of the
travel story of the other world, ¡´Chasabonpulyi>,this study compared and analyzed ¡´Hesimgok>, a song sung in Jeju¡¯s shamanritual of moving of the dead and ¡´Chasabonpulyi> which shows the existencetype of the death angel. I could identify close relationships between them asfollows.First. ¡´Hesimgok> and ¡´Chasabonpulyi> shows a cause and effect relationshipwith each other since ¡´Hesimgok> shows the tasks and duties of the deathangel and ¡´Chasabonpulyi> tells about the history of his conducts.Second, Both stories share similar epic structure, i. e. moving to the otherworld- living in the other world- transformation of being. In ¡´Hesimgok>, thestory goes as; the death angel coming ? the dead¡¯s moving to the other world? living in the other world ? being reborn in this world, and ¡´Chasabonpulyi>tells about the travel to the other world of Ganglim as his job duty, hisexperience of the other world(meeting the Great King Yama), his rebirth andtaking the job of death angel as a result of decision by the Great King Yama.Third, Ganglim¡¯s trace in ¡´Chasabonpulyi> coincides with that of a deathmessenger and a dead man. Ganglim transforms from a dead man at the beginning of the journey to a death angel as he travels along the other world. As a result, the death angel and Ganglim share the common story elementsand behavior. It is thought that the story motif of moving to the other world and livingin it was naturally known to Jeju people as ¡´Hyoesimgok(üÞãýÍØ)> was receivedby Jeju shamans and became a part of Buddhist ritual songs. ¡´Chasabonpulyi>created a travel story of the other world and a new story of death angelconducting his duties by accepting ¡´Tale of Kimchi Heungdeok District Chief>and using its epic structure and by expanding and enriching the story of¡´Hesimgok>. The close relationship between ¡´Hesimgok> and ¡´Chasabonpulyi>is more evident in that both are ritual songs about the moving the dead tothe other world in which existence of death angels stands out and thecharacters, after-death-life and world view of ¡´Hesimgok> are realized in¡´Chasabonpulyi> in various ways.   (ÀÌÇÏ »ý·«)
