This paper illuminated on ¡®Th
rowing/Thrown¡¯ motif as the way and ¡®Sangja¡¯ motif named ¡®Musoeseokgap¡¯ as the tool to the rite of passage archetype.
Humans come out into the outs
ide world by cutting the umbilical cord two times. One is, from a biological point of view, a human cuts the umbilical cord to come out from the womb to be born. The other is, from a sociocultural point of view, he/she cuts it to go into the world outside to be reborn as a social member. In the selected text, which is Gwaenegitdang Bonpuri, the main character, Gwaenegithanjip, is thrown away into the water by his father with his body sealed in ¡®Sangja¡¯, called Musoeseokgap. This behavior shows that his father considers Gwaenegithanjip as a person who lacks manlike features at the time they should be developed considerably, and hopes he has strong manlike anima. ¡®Sealed in Sangja¡¯ has two meanings. One is ¡®the death¡¯ because Gwaenegithanjip has to throw his old characters away to have a new ego, which is ¡®the Ritualized manlikeness¡¯. The other is ¡®the womb¡¯ because he has to be born again. In other words, ¡®Sangja¡¯ is a space not only for death, but also for rebirth into the world: a mother\'s womb for life and a small universe. In that sense, ¡®Throwing/Thrown¡¯ symbolizes death for a new life and ¡®Sangja¡¯ symbolizes a tool to connect death with life.
In the text, Gwaenegithanjip
experiences both death and rebirth by being sealed in ¡®Sangja¡¯, passes a ritual, and returns his ordinary life. It has more meanings than just to come back to his hometown. Even though thrown away in young age, he eventually makes his family, becomes a hero by subjugating the world, and comes back to his hometown in spite of the prize from the emperor. Although the hometown is the same place as before on the surface, his status has been changed. This change was able to happen because he understood and received the intention of the father and forgave him who had tried to kill him. He comes back marching with a big army and shows his changed status to his father. In this paper, it says that these two experiences have to be undergone to get Gwaenegithanjip\'s ritual done perfectly. ¡®Receiving¡¯ is solution in which an injuring person doesn\'t do anything and an injured person does something to cure for the injury. ¡®Forgiving¡¯ is not just by denying what comes to the mind, such as revengeful thoughts, but by trying to give passion, forgiveness and love to the wrongdoer. This is beyond just ¡®Receiving¡¯. Gwaenegithanjip accepted his father\'s evil deed so that he was able to be reborn as a great social figure and forgive his father. The ritual can be done under the condition on which these two facts are based and set ¡®Throwing/Thrown motif 󰡑as the way to ritual and ¡®Sangja motif¡¯ as the tool for ritual. (ÀÌÇÏ »ý·«)
