the history of english literat

the transcendence of the impo
rtance of being earnest
its mysterious that all liter
ary works seem to have various ideas on them.but more strange thing is that the selected work, the importance of being earnest, is one of the most complicated one, despite lack of my ability to analyze.people say this work is considered wildes greatest and the modern paragon of the comedy of manners.but its really hard to recognize that with first reading.we need to read it again and again with great concentration on characters, themes, dialogs, etc.characters show aspects of victorian age and seem to have various meanings through their performances.
in act ¥°, jack confessed that
he invented his brother ernest for need an excuse to get into town.surprisingly, algernon also created invalid bunbury for when he wanted to get out of the town.according to analysis of others, jack and algernon have dual identities.because wilde wanted to project his dual identities of sexual orientation.but i want to extend the meaning of dual identities.jack made some lie when algernon started to question about cigarette case, and he quickly turned to the truth when algernon found clear clues.jack , in this situation, has not only dual sexual identities, but also dual identities for himself.like him, we(victorian age and now) have some kind of two identities.there are some people who conflicts with sexual identity and others lie for their benefit or honor.what about reflect yourself first before accusing jack and algernon?
is there true love between ce
cily and algernon? she had arranged her love and marriage though she had never met him.because she thought someone who is named ernest is the ideal spouse, like gwendolen.this name has absolute confidence to both.ernest, sounding like earnest, seems to show uprightness and honesty.this is the great irony of the play, as jack and algernon have both falsified the name.so, social standing is very important to cecily.the connection between she and algernon not seems to real love.both hearts are not centered on this relationship.she just desired to marry ernest for her social benefit, and he wanted to be shown as a ernest.to algernon, the name is more important than his heart, because he couldnt keep their love without ernest.he also regard social position as a precious thing.wilde is also using his witty voice in their relationship in act¥±.there are lots of sweet dialogs between them, which make it seem to pure love.and this is also a device that shows their love is covered with false surface of both.i think wild wanted to indicates that people love to disguise them to get mask of manners, often in a wrong way and just for their social status.
in the last act, we finally f
ind the secret of jacks birth, lady bracknell informs jack that he is the sun of her sister, making him algernons older brother.at last, jack found out that he was named after his father, ernest john moncrieff.the various conflicts from lies are resolved since they turn out not to be he lie, after all jack truly is ernest, algernon truly is his mischievous brother.people say this shows that the social truths are lies, because the characters still wear the mask of manners.for instance, lady bracknells sudden liking to cecily, after hearing of her personal fortune, is a lie, she puts on her shallow mask of manners to hid her obvious materialism.we cant deny that all characters seem firm with their ideas, although all lies are revealed.
but i think we need to focus
on the truth.jack has created ernest, maybe before this play started and he has been pretending to be ernest, though he doesnt have to.he already has ernest in his identity.i would say ernest is not only a someones name, but also an ideal model that everyone has.each of you has an unique dream model that want to achieve in your life, and its not presented the outside of you.theres no one that exactly have same goal with you.though someone looks perfect in every way, his all aspects cannot make you perfect like him.and of course, he is not a perfect one.materialism can make fun of us with great lies.it seems the appearance is everything to appreciate someone.but once you believe in the authority of materialism, you always live with your mask of manners and dual identities.if we try to find ourselves through inner reflection, then we dont have to wander around all the matters of society.the answer seems pretty simple, the manner to keep it seems quite hard though.
wilde tried to touch all aspe
cts of victorian age and desired to show how that age absurd in marriage, identity, etc.thanks to him, we easily could find out some unreal things that existed in victorian age.and one more thing, we could also catch some similarities between victorian age and contemporary life.i was surprised and ashamed of myself when i found my characters through some characters.the importance of being earnest is make us laugh and at the same time, make us realize the immoral thing that spread out our society.
