an investigation has found th
at blood infected with the aids and hepatitis viruses was supplied to patients and pharmaceutical makers as a result of red cross officials negligence.this is an appalling story of disregard for patient safety.
the ministry of health and we
lfare says that of 2,550 blood donations that tested positive for infections over the past 10 years, 1,205 were later mislabeled as negative.of those that tested positive on reexamination, 205 were used for transfusions and 480 for the manufacture of plasma derivatives.
these findings have grave imp
lications, given that only a tiny portion of all blood donations have been reexamined.no wonder transfusion-caused infections of aids and hepatitis have been reported in the past.
given such sloppy management
by the korea national red cross, the sole agency authorized to collect blood donations, patients are bound to be infected by unsafe blood, as the medical profession has pointed out.the profession accurately warns that too little attention is being paid to the process of collecting, testing, and labeling blood donations.the knrc is accused of being more concerned about the amount of blood collected than it is about patient safety.
the ministry says the two pat
ients who received transfusions of hiv-positive blood have not yet been found to be hiv carriers, and that infected blood used to manufacture plasma derivatives was treated to make it safe before it was used.
but patients who received blo
od infected with hepatitis have hardly been safe.of 70 people who received transfusions of such blood, 50 have died.
the ministry will have to mak
e adequate compensation to the patients who contracted hepatitis because of transfusions, or their survivors, as it has promised to do.but how can it restore the health of people who have died, or are on the verge of dying?
compensation is only an initi
al step toward restoring public confidence in the safety of blood transfusions.the ministry must revise relevant laws, if needed, and act immediately to ensure that no contaminated blood is supplied to patients and pharmaceutical makers hereafter.
