¡°Are the good times really ove
r for good?¡±
When I think about America, i
t reminds me the world¡¯s strongest and wealthiest country that has a huge territory. However, America is having a hard time now in terms of money and health conditions. According to Rasmussenreports.com, 52% of Americans think the best times have passed while only 35% said the best days are still to come. I agree that America¡¯s good times are in the past for three reasons: the misled Iraq war, economic recession and obesity.
America has contributed on ke
eping the world¡¯s peace. For example, it helped Jewish people and defeated Nazis and North Korean armies during WW¥± and Korean War. However, unfortunately, it made a mistake for this time. In 2006, I decided to volunteer to be dispatched in Iraq with a decent purpose that I want to contribute on keeping world piece and eliminating terrorism. A few months later after my dispatch, I was having a dinner with my squad members and U.S. soldiers while watching news together. There was Donald H. Rumsfell, a former secretary of defense, on the news saying that the war was based on wrong information. We were very shocked. I questioned to myself, ¡°Then, is this war really for keeping peace? What kind of wrong information is he talking about?¡± The U.S. soldiers looked confused as well. In fact, the war wasn¡¯t totally unnecessary. I still think taking Saddam Hussein off from his dictatorship was definitely a good thing. He deserved death penalty considering what he caused to his citizens and neighbor countries. According to Robert Kagan, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, ¡°Former secretary of state Madeleine Albright once compared him to Hitler, and the comparison was apt in a couple of ways. Hussein, as we will soon relearn in excruciating detail, had contempt for human life and no qualms about killing thousands of his own citizens and many thousands more of his neighbors' citizens¡¦¡¦¡± However, even if the consequences of the war were successful which are yet questionable except the removal of the dictator, my point is a nation cannot declare a war based on misunderstandings. Nevertheless, America did. As a result, none of weapons of mass destruction that the United States thought Iraq had, was found. Plus, it couldn¡¯t find any good evidence that supports Hussein was closely related with Al Qaeda. Charles V. Pena, a director of defense policy studies at the Cato Institute said, ¡°In fact, all the evidence suggests the contrary. Hussein was a secular Muslim ruler, and Bin Laden is a radical Muslim fundamentalist-their ideological views are hardly compatible.¡± But Iraq was bombed and we can¡¯t take it back like spilled water. Now, the United States is blamed for the dishonorable war. The nation would hardly have its glory days at least for a while.
There is another thing the mi
sled war brought to this country: recession. The war was way too expensive. In an article titled, ¡°The Economic Cost of the War¡± James Glanz said the war has cost up to 860 billion dollars. As stated by Peter S. Goodman in his article, ¡°U.S. Unemployment Rate Hits 10.2%, Highest in 26 Years¡±, the unemployment rate is 10.2 percent, the highest level since 10.8 in 1982. One person out of ten is jobless and that is 15.7 million people in total. The rate might even go beyond that. Many business owners closed their companies since people are not spending and numerous people got fired because the rest companies could not afford salaries for them. I wonder if America will continue to remain as the wealthiest country. The life standard of many of the U.S. citizens has declined especially for those jobless people. Although life isn¡¯t all about the money, people need to meet basic needs regarding money which would be paying for bills, rent and other necessities. Without satisfying these needs, people living in capitalism can hardly be happy. How is having a good time possible when a person is jobless or homeless? ¡°Even if many of the Iraq war¡¯s costs simply vanished, analysts say those savings would be too small and come too late to jolt the economy out of the crisis¡¦¡¦,¡± James said. Unfortunately, I guess people should just endure having a bad time for a while.
While the recession is taking
happiness away from people, they are fattening up by consuming cheap, unhealthy food and being lazy. Nowadays, children, especially juveniles tend to keep indoors playing video or computer games. Advanced technology has enabled people to move less. Moreover, Americans¡¯ appetite seeks for greasy and sweet menus such as fries and glazed donuts which led most people to consume high fructose, too much fat and calories. Enjoying a little bit of fries and glazed donuts once a week can be mind-blowing satisfaction but they taste too good to control yourself from having much of them. Consequently, all these factors led more than half of Americans to obesity. According to Michael S. Rosenwald in his article ¡°Why America Has to Be Fat¡±, about two-thirds of the U.S. population is overweight. Why being obese makes people unhappy? Because a person can suffer type ¥± diabetes, stroke, and heart disease for being fat. Furthermore, it causes you to spend more money on you never wanted. In an article ¡°Five Financial Costs of American Obesity¡±, Tina Peng tells us that obese people pay more for medical costs and gasoline because they are unhealthy and more weight burns more fuels. Plus, oversized people who may take up more than one seat need to buy an adequate number of seats on the flight. My opinion is if you are not healthy, you cannot be happy because you can¡¯t do anything if you are sick. I consider obesity as sickness because it can kill you by heart attack and stroke. It¡¯s like carrying a bomb that no one knows when it¡¯s going to explode.
To be honest, I wanted to say
good times are not over. I tried hard to come up with ideas that support America is having a good time and find good evidences. But I couldn¡¯t find good ones. Rather, it was much easier to find out what factors are bringing America down since there were full of articles on the web and magazines saying America is in agony. That is when I changed my mind. As I read articles about the war, recession and obesity problems in America, I realized they are more serious than I thought. The war has brought the national pride and economy down. More people are becoming unhealthy. It would be strange if a person feels the U.S. is in happiness in that kind of circumstance. Although I admit good times are over for now, I think good times travel meaning that they will come back. When they come back, I hope my favorite foreign country thrives more than it used to.
