argue 95
The following appeared in a m
emo from the new vice president of Sartorian, a company that manufactures men's clothing.
"Five years ago, at a time wh
en we had difficulty obtaining reliable supplies of high-quality wool fabric, we discontinued production of our popular alpaca overcoat. Now that we have a new fabric supplier, we should resume production. Given the outcry from our customers when we discontinued this product and the fact that none of our competitors offers a comparable product, we can expect pent-up consumer demand for our alpaca coats. This demand and the overall increase in clothing prices will make Sartorian's alpaca overcoats more profitable than ever before."
Write a response in which you
examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

At glance, the author's state
ments may sound reasonable, however there are a few questions to be answered first before deciding whether the new scheme would be profitable or not.
To begin with, the new suppli
er's reliability must be evaluated. The argument simply says a new supplier is found and does not discuss about if it is dependable. The author radically assumes the supplier will consistently provide the necessities for producing the coat with high-quality. However, given the difficulties he had in having a reliable supplier in the past, he must evaluate the dependency of the new supplier.
In addition, the author predi
cts the consumers would still highly demand the coat. Their complaint was made five years ago. Now that time has passed, the trend of coats might have changed from the features that an alpaca coat has, which draws a reasonable doubt that they may not want an alpaca coat anymore. Another incidence that supports this doubt is the reasons why the competitors are not offering the coat. That may not be because they cannot produce it, but because the demand is not high anymore, the cost of manufacturing became too high or some new regulation that prevents using a material that is required for the coat production is imposed. No matter what, the author should make sure the customers' demand for the coat is still high.
Moreover, while increased clo
thing prices may mean increase in revenue, it may also mean the production cost went up. The author should consider carefully which one weighs more, the revenue or the cost, because if cost weighs more, it means increased prices will rather decrease the profit.
To summarize, the author draw
s conclusion hastily before carefully examining the factors that help his new plan be profitable. The author should bolster his proposal by providing answers to all the questions mentioned above.
