Take-home 1_
Assignment: Take home 1 - ARG
UE #128
The following appeared in a l
etter from the owner of the Sunnyside Towers apartment complex to its manager.
"One month ago, all the showe
rheads in the first three buildings of the Sunnyside Towers complex were modified to restrict maximum water flow to one-third of what it used to be. Although actual readings of water usage before and after the adjustment are not yet available, the change will obviously result in a considerable savings for Sunnyside Corporation, since the corporation must pay for water each month. Except for a few complaints about low water pressure, no problems with showers have been reported since the adjustment. Clearly, modifying showerheads to restrict water flow throughout all twelve buildings in the Sunnyside Towers complex will increase our profits further."
Write a response in which you
discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
In the letter, the author arg
ues that the corporation should lower water flow to increase profits. However, he should present more solid evidence to convince others.
The author needs to provide m
ore sound evidence whether lowering water flow throughout all buildings would cause no further problems with showers and increase the profits of the company. The argument states there were only a few complaints about low pressure, however, it has been only a month since the adjustment. In the long run, more people may make complaints. Furthermore, the author cannot overgeneralize that low water pressure would always decrease the water usage. It may merely cause people to take a shower for a longer time, ultimately using the amount of water somewhere close to the amount before the change. Hence, the adjustment should be monitored for a longer period.
The argument should be supple
mented with more concrete information whether the modification would bring considerable savings since the company does not have actual readings of water usage before and after the adjustment. At this point, whether the cost saving is likely to happen and is going to be considerable is only the author's assumption until he has the actual data is his hands. The company should wait until the reading is available.
More specific evidence is nee
ded on the solidness of the conclusion that water flow restriction would increase profits. Residents may decide to move out due to inconvenience caused by low water pressure, which will decrease the company's income. Moreover, the cost saving might be negligible since the reduction in water flow does not include other water lines and is only limited to showerheads. If the income loss from residents' move-out outweighs cost savings from water use, the profits would rather decrease.
In conclusion, the argument i
s unpersuasive in many aspects. In order to bolster the argument, the company should record changes in income and water cost in the long run to make sure whether modified water flow is effective in increasing profits.
