3ㆍ1운동은 일제의 강력한 식민지 지배에 대한 민족의
저항이었다. 일본은 조선을 강제로 빼앗았다. 그리고 군사력으로 정치ㆍ경제ㆍ사회ㆍ문화의 분야에서 폭력적인 억압과 수탈을 자행하는 무단통치를 실시했다. 수많은 항일 운동가들이 학살되고 감옥에 갇혔다. 일본은 모든 형태의 반일 활동을 탄압했다.
이러한 정치적 억압과 경제적 약탈로 농민과 백성의 생
활은 매우 악화되었다. 일본의 식민지 지배에 대한 분노와 저항의지가 커져갔다.

3.1 movement appeared as a re
sistance to Japanese oppressive colonization. Having Korea under perfect control with militarism, Japan governed Korea with an iron fist and repressed in almost every part like political, economic, social and cultural ways. All kinds of the movements against Japan was suppressed and whoever did an anti-Japanese struggle was dragged into the jail and was tortured and got killed. Living conditions of Korean got really worse because of this political suppression and plunder. This flew Korean people into a rage and raised will to resist again Japan.
3ㆍ1운동은 몇 개월 동안 지속되었다. 도시와 같이
교통이 발달한 곳을 중심으로 시작되어 점차 농촌으로 전파되었다. 그리고는 전국적인 규모로 확산되었다. 참여하는 인원과 계층이 늘어났다. 운동의 양상도 비폭력 시위에서 폭력적인 투쟁으로 발전하였다. 국외로도 확산되었으며 만주, 연해주, 도쿄, 오사카, 필라델피아 등에서도 시위가 벌어졌다.

3ㆍ1운동은 지식인과 학생뿐 아닌 노동자, 농민, 상
공인 등 각층이 폭넓게 참여한 최대 규모의 항일운동이었다. 이는 독립운동사에서 커다란 분수령이었다. 나라 안팎에 민족 독립 의지와 힘을 보여주었고, 대중적 토대를 마련해 독립운동을 체계화ㆍ조직화ㆍ활성화하였다. 백성들은 운동에 참가하면서 민족의식, 정치의식을 높일 수 있었으며, 이는 1920년대 여러 사회운동 및 조직이 성장할 수 있는 기반이 되어주었다.다.

It became a watershed in the history of an independence movement of Korea. It was something that showed will and potential power of Korea for becoming free and independent from Japanese imperialism. With this movement as a momentum, an independent movement became more systematic and organized. It awakened people to a sense for national and political consciousness. It also became a base for a lot of different movements and organizations to come out and be organized to grow.
